KT: Eva’s ex-husband says something really tough to her when she’s suffering her intense migraines: “I wanted a wife, not a patient.” What inspired you to write a lead with chronic illness? Just an inexplicable connection that asks no questions, just is? Sure.

Do you believe that some people really do find that? It doesn’t feel over the top or forced - it feels really … real. And, for me, laughing at nonsense makes life more palatable. Life is nuts, and even the darkest parts can have an absurdist spin. I love to draw the humor out in almost everything. It’s actually hard for me to write anything in a super-straightforward, straight-faced way, which is one of the reasons I went into magazine writing instead of newspaper reporting. TIA WILLIAMS: Thank you! That’s always my goal, so this is fabulous to hear. How do you so effectively write prose that balances trauma and humor? You do it exceptionally well. KATIE TAMOLA: The book establishes a very authentically human and funny tone.
